Johnny Hallyday: the fate of a rockstar

Johnny Hallyday is 55 years of career, 2000 magazine covers, 183 tours, 28 million spectators who participated in his concerts, 1000 recorded titles, 110 million records sold, 40 gold records and hundreds of collaborations with renowned artists, both French and international. Behind these figures lies a great man, a tender seducer, a caring dad, but also a man who fought for months against lung cancer, which finally won at the age of 74. A look back at the life of this icon, born to shine.

His career

Born on June 15, 1943, Jean-Philippe Smet, whose real name is both French and Belgian. As a teenager, he was raised by his aunt with his two cousins after his parents divorced. His life as a teenager was summed up between the world of cabaret and family entertainment in which he participated. Then he continued his life between London, Copenhagen before returning to Paris, at a time when rock' roll had conquered the world and a certain Elvis Presley was the king.

Drawing heavily on his idol Elvis, Jean-Philippe tries with his guitar, his first experiences in song. It takes up country standards and French adaptations of American song on television.  March 14, 1960 was the date that changed his career. He reprised the title of Dalida, Love You Madly, which went on the radio and became a real success.  Jean-Philippe's name is now Johnny Hallyday, inspired by the name of his cousin's husband.

Very quickly, his career was launched and Johnny becomes a adored star. He formed the band Golden Strings and toured the concert halls. Johnny Stark of Phillips signed him to a contract and made his first Olympia.  He began releasing his albums, including the first "Hi Buddies", which was followed by  Johnny sings Hallyday, then the star's big hits including The Lost Generation, It's Life, In Spare Parts, Rock'n Roll Attitude and many others. Johnny's career was set to last both on stage and on film sets.

His personal life

In addition to his great and fascinating career as a singer, Johnny Hallyday's personal life has been marked by adventures, romantic setbacks, great relationships, but also accidents of life (one that cost him his life), failed business (the the record company that created it), problems with the tax authorities and  hospital stays.  He also made some suicide attempts, but the disease that killed him on December 2, 2017 was lung cancer. When Johnny died, his legacy was the subject of a dispute between his wife and children David and Laura.

Johnny Hallyday had four children:

• David Hallyday, born from his first marriage to Sylvie Vartan
• Laura Smet, born from her marriage to Nathalie Baye
• Jade and Joy Hallyday: whom he adopted with his last wife Laetitia Hallyday.
