Back to school is a time of year when families have to deal with many expenses. In order to support them, the government offers the Back to School Allowance (ARS). This aid, which will be upgraded on 1 April 2023, concerns approximately 3 million families in France. In this article, we will detail what the ARS is, who can benefit from it, its amount, its payment date... And as a bonus, find our FAQ!
The ARS is a financial aid intended for families with children aged 6 to 18 attending a public or private institution, in apprenticeship or cared for in a specialized care institution. It aims to help families cover back-to-school costs, such as supplies, materials, or clothing.
Careful! This allowance is not available to parents who homeschool their children, unless the children are enrolled in correspondence courses, such as those offered by the CNED.
To benefit from the ARS, household income at N-2 is taken into account, i.e. 2021 income for the ARS of the year 2023.
The resource ceilings are as follows:
If household resources slightly exceed these ceilings, you may be eligible for a differential back-to-school allowance, also calculated in relation to your income. Check with your Caf or MSA.
The amount of the allowance varies according to the age of the child. For the year 2023, the amounts are as follows:
It should be noted that these amounts are subject to revalorization each year, depending on changes in the cost of living.
The ARS is traditionally paid during the month of August, a little before the start of the school year. For 2023, payments will take place on August 1 in the departments of Mayotte and Réunion, and on August 16 in metropolitan France and in the departments of Guadeloupe, Guyana and Martinique.
If you are already a CAF beneficiary and your child is between 6 and 15 years old, the ARS is automatically paid to you.
If your child is under 6 years old and entering CP, you will have to send a certificate of schooling to the Caf.
If your child is between 16 and 18 years old, you must declare that he or she is still in school or learning from your "My Account" space on the CAF website or via the "My Account" application.
➡️ If you are not yet a beneficiary, you will have to create a personal space on the CAF website and fill out the "Children" form.
