T-rex, Raptor, Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus, the statement of these strange words sound like a shower melody to the ears of our blonde heads. Dinosaurs have always fascinated young and old, the proof is the global success of the Jurassic Park saga. These extinct monsters, with surprising dimensions and abilities, are still the stars of elementary and kindergarten classes today. Dinosaur appeals to young children, from 2 to 7 years old, and we explain why...
We know that they existed, and yet these titanic creatures are akin to invented beasts, directly out of our imagination. It must be said that the history of dinosaurs is fascinating. The reasons for their extinction are still being debated, and there are still new specimens, ever larger and more frightening. But strangely, dinosaurs, for all their teeth and cinematic representations, do not frighten young children. Rather, they are seen by them as fantastic rather than monstrous animals. Playing with them in the schoolyard, accumulating posters and decorative objects in their room does not scare them. The dinosaur does not invite itself into nightmares, only in incredible adventures that they like to invent.
According to studies conducted by child psychiatrists at Johns Hopkins Hospital, this fascination with dinosaurs from younger children is good news. By developing such a passion, allowing them to quote names more complicated than each other, dinosaurs make our children smarter, more tenacious minds. They learn quickly and well, because their interest is aroused by something incredible, immense in their eyes.
Love for dinosaurs is also something that is shared as a family. And that's what young children appreciate. They feel a greater interest when they talk about dinosaurs than when they explain the differences between the latest fashionable tops. The dinosaur thus brings children and parents closer together, giving them an almost infinite topic of conversation.
From the age of 3, the child needs to identify with something or an animal species to vent his anger. The children will thus unload their too full of emotions through the game. To achieve this, they will naturally turn to representations that impress them: a bear, a lion, or even a T-Rex. Putting yourself in the shoes of a dinosaur during play sessions allows the child to feel stronger, invincible, it reassures him and gives him more confidence.
There is no gender attributed to a passion, but the fascination with dinosaurs is generally more important to little boys. This is no accident. Films like Jurassic Park more often highlight a man like the adventurer at the heart of the story, the one capable of taming these fantastic beasts. In cartoons, the dinosaur is often depicted as a male, and rare are the females that surround it. This lack of femininity in cinematic representations prevents some little girls from identifying with dinosaurs.
Your child will be happy to share this love for dinosaurs with you. To encourage him in these discoveries you can show your interest with gifts related to the world of dinosaurs, a dinosaur binder for example, posters, books, figurines. Visits to the museum are also a great way to go further in his passion and provide precise answers to his questions.
